Effects of Coffee on Children

Much controversy has raged around the question of the advisability of giving coffee to children as has occurred regarding its general action. Dr. J. Hutchinson advocates furnishing children with coffee, while Dr. Charlotte Abbey is strongly against such a practise, claiming that use of caffein-containing beverages before the attainment of full growth will weaken nerve power.

Nalpasse observes that until fully developed the young are immoderately excited by coffee; and Hawk is of the opinion that to give such a stimulant to an active school-child is both logically and dietetically incorrect. Dr. Vaughn advances this scientific argument against the drinking of coffee by children under Continue reading

The Physiological Action of Coffee

Drinking too much coffee may be attributed to three causes: the demand for, and the pleasing effects of, a hot drink (a very small percentage of the coffee consumed is taken cold), the pleasing reaction which its flavors excite on the gustatory nerve, and the stimulating effect which it has upon the body.

The flavor is due largely to the volatile aromatic constituents, “caffeol,” which, when isolated, have a general depressant action on the system; and the stimulation is caused by the caffein. The general and specific actions of these individual components, together with that of the hypothetical “caffetannic acid,” are considered under separate headings.

Coffee may be considered a member of the general class of adjuvant, or auxiliary, foods to which other beverages and condiments of negligible inherent food value belong. Its position on the average menu may be attributed largely to its palatability and comforting effects. However, the medicinal value of coffee in the dietary and per se must not be overlooked. Are you addicted to coffee? Do you feel like you NEED to have that cup of joe to get you going in the morning? Are the smell and sound of a brewing pot of coffee your sole motivators to get out of bed? If so, you may be suffering from caffeine addiction. Please read on. I’m going to give you 7 reasons why you should cut back on your coffee consumption now.

Tips On How To Get Rid Of Caffeine Addiction

Many people rely on coffee to give them a morning jumpstart. It is common among students and professionals to depend so much on this type of beverage that is high in caffeine content, which later on leads to an addiction. You know that having too much of something and anything can seriously be harmful. Too much caffeine can cause you headaches, insomnia, heart palpitations, and diseases in the digestive system.

The consumption of coffee is actually not bad for as long as you can still function and do your daily activities properly even without taking it. However, drinking coffee becomes bad when you start having greedy cravings of it, and at the same time feeling lethargic when you miss one day of not having the beverage. Coffee is not the only drink that contains caffeine. You should also look out for softdrinks, energy drinks, and tea. Ceasing the intake of coffee will not be helpful at all if you continually have excessive intake on these other beverages.

CONTROL THE CRAVING

Caffeine addiction is just like any other addiction such as smoking. It is not easy to stop it immediately. Caffeine craving has an iron grip on one’s mind and its Continue reading

Causes of a Caffeine Headache and How to Avoid Them

A caffeine headache is a headache caused by withdrawing from caffeine. It is basically a withdrawal symptom. If you consume copious amounts of caffeine regularly you should be wary about stopping suddenly.

Normally people who get caffeine headaches are those that take more than three cups of coffee per day then stop all of a sudden.

The headaches are not caused by consuming too much caffeine but rather by halting this intake. Caffeine is found in a variety of products which include; coffee, energy drinks, sweets, fizzy drinks etc
Caffeine headaches are caused by chemical reactions in the body.

The chemistry behind it is really simple. In your body, you have a compound known as adenosine. Adenosine is responsible for the dilation of blood vessels to enhance blood flow in the body.

When you take caffeine it inhibits adenosine and therefore causing blood vessels to constrict. This lowers the body’s rate of blood circulation. Consequently the vessels dilate when the consumption of caffeine is stopped. Caffeine headaches are a result of this sudden dilation.

Caffeine withdrawal symptoms such as a Caffeine Withdrawal Headache

Headaches from caffeine withdrawal are quite common and managing these caffeine withdrawal symptoms early such as a caffeine headache, is very important.

“I have an ‘excited’ and outgoing personality as it is. This thing gets you going better than caffeine does” – Patricio E. Miranda

The reasons an individual would want to risk caffeine withdrawal symptoms like depression, headache and fatigue, and caffeine withdrawal headache could include wanting to kick the caffeine addiction, or because of doctors orders, usually to reduce high blood pressure.

Caffeine withdrawal symptoms occur because caffeine is an addictive substance, the body becomes dependent on it to function properly after prolonged, regular consumption.

Fortunately, caffeine withdrawal symptoms are not as long lived nor are they as severe as withdrawal from other addictive substances like opiates or tobacco products.

One side affect is increased sleepiness. This will typically occur early in the morning, especially if the former caffeine addict drank one or more cups of coffee in the morning to aid in the process of waking up.… Continue Reading…
